TTR237 British Railways from the air part 2: Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Southampton and Salisbury.
The old railway town of Basingstoke lies on the South Western main line from Waterloo, so it's very busy with commuters from Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset heading for work in London. But it’s also an important junction station with IC trains stopping on the journey to the Midlands. The same route takes container trains, automotive and Enterprise wagonload to and from the Midlands and the northern cities. We film Eastleigh from the ground (too near Southampton airport!) but get airborne again in Southampton to view the port (mostly automotive) and the two container terminals. We continue northwest to the market town of Romsey and then on to Salisbury – the alternative route to Basingstoke for some freight- we see some and discuss why.
