Snälltåget Cabride+ Alvesta to Linköping
We are guests of Snälltåget the new brand for mainline passenger trains in Sweden operated by Veolia. Our train is the 09.20 from Malmo Central station (Malmö C) due into Stockholm at 14.31. The train of classic Swedish IC cars is hauled by a modern TAURUS locomotive belonging to open access operator HectorRail.
This section Alvesta – Linköping takes us across the highest point of the mainline to Stockholm. 300m asl. Benign in summer- snow is common from December to early April. The central section is quite bleak with few population centres. Over the top of the high plain we descend to Mjölby where the line to the north via the huge classification yard at Hallsberg diverges. From there it’s a short run to the industrial town of Linköping home of the aviation division of SAAB.
