Budapest - capital of Hungary. A city of 1.7 million sitting astride both banks of the Danube; Buda on the left bank and Pest on the right. We look at two interesting arrivals from the west: by boat from Vienna or by train over the Ostbahn- the main railway to the east. We investigate public transport in the city: trams, metro, funiculars and local rail as this helps us explore. In and around the city we view the classic tourist sights: Buda Castle, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Liberty Bridge, the Market, and the Parliament Building- the Országház, then make some special tours for rail enthusiasts: the magnificent RAIL PARK, and a very special eastern delight the famed Pioneer Railway. Our days out are to Lake Balaton, holiday country for the Hungarians, and to Esztergom, a delightfully preserved city on the on the Danube bend across the water from fellow EU member Slovakia.
