IC 614 starts her run from Munich every day at the unearthly hour of 05.23. She will run to Stuttgart via Augsburg and Ulm. For the time being she will have to reverse at Stuttgart and then take the NBS to Mannheim. Her next call is the university city of Heidelburg, where she pauses briefly before swinging west to avoid Frankfurt. She calls at Mainz and would normally take the left bank IC line towards Koblenz. But today, because of engineering work on the line she is diverted across the Rhine to the right bank line via Rüdesheim where we watch IC trains scuttle along the promenade. The main line is regained at Koblenz, we have a look at this great rail centre then join the driver on the footplate for the run to Bonn and Cologne. It's a busy route and we pass ICs, ECs, ICEs and freight- more freight than you would expect! At Bonn we have a quick look around, then continue north, past the massive new container terminal, before weaving slowly into Cologne Hbf. This is more than just a cabride, it's a mini documentary that gives you the flavour of the route! Enjoy it now! This will be the last summer of ceaseless activity; as of winter 2002 most fast trains will be taken over by ICE3 sets, and will run along the Rhein Main NBS, a faster but less scenic journey.
