The Betuweroute was part of a strategic plan to maintain the competitiveness of Rotterdam Port and release capacity on the classic passenger train network. Planning started in the 1980s, but construction was slow, because of complex planning regulations, difficult consultation exercises and environmental impact studies. The line opened in late 2007, but there was no mad scramble to move trains away from the classic lines (through Venlo and Arnhem) because the access charges were set too high for the train operators’ comfort. Compromises were slowly reached and by 2010 (despite the recession) traffic levels built. The largest single ‘boost’ came when RAILION transferred their iron ore and coal trains to the route in 2011. The line is 100km long from Kijfhoek to Zevenaar where it meets the classic line between Arnhem and Emmerich. A fantastic piece of railway engineering, but- because of the environmental protection measures- not the easiest to film! We follow the line east from Kijfhoek yard, visit the major features and its interconnections. To put the line in context - having followed a wagonload train over the route - we follow a car train to its journey’s end at Oosterhout. Narrated filmed in HD. 88 mins Published December 2012
