We have travelled south from Prague with train R635 to České Budějovice and have reached Benešov u Prahy, 40km south of the national capital. Plans for the railway south of Benešov u Prahy are quite ambitious. It is due to be transformed, cash permitting, into a 140-160kph double track railway. This is to be achieved partly by upgrading the existing route and partly by the construction of new infrastructure. České Budějovice is a city of nearly 100,000 and was an important staging post on this trade route to Italy long before there was a railway in town!
