Cologne Eifeltor container terminal (Umschlagbahnhof) lies south of the city on the left bank of the Rhein. It was opened in 1969 on the site of a former single-wagon marshalling yard also called Eifeltor. It was dramatically expanded between 2010 and 2012 to include a direct connection with the German motorway network and a freight ‘village’ was built to allow customers to ‘break bulk” within the terminal curtilage. Today the terminal handles some 40 trains a day – most to German ports and two a day to Spain. Gremberg classification yard is also south of the city but on the other side of the river. It’s the third largest Rbf in the country with a heavy emphasis on the chemical sector. Other locations include Köln-Kalk-Nord (Cologne’s very active but forgotten yard) and the Rhein harbour to the north which includes the Ford assembly plant.
